  • What to Consider When Choosing a VRA | Flex VRA

Choosing the Right VRA System for Your Clinic Not all VRA systems are designed the same. As pediatric hearing evaluations have evolved, the expectations for VRA equipment have changed as well. Clinics now look for systems that are reliable, flexible, and easy to use while supporting consistent patient responses. Here are the key factors to consider when selecting a VRA system. 1. Reliability and Timing A VRA system must respond instantly when the clinician triggers a reinforcer. Any lag or delay makes the test harder and can disrupt the child’s attention. Software driven systems tend to offer faster activation times compared to older mechanical VRA boxes. 2. Quality of Visual Reinforcers Children respond best to bright, engaging, but not overstimulating content. Look for a VRA system that allows you to customize content and adjust how exciting the reinforcer should be. Features like House Rules in Flex VRA let you control how the center monitor behaves so you get clearer head turns. 3. Integration With Audiology Equipment The best VRA equipment connects smoothly with your audiometer, remote, or clinic workflow. Consider whether the system supports: • Remote control activation • Audiometer integration • PC or software based triggering Seamless integration allows clinicians to stay focused on the patient instead of the equipment. 4. Durability and Build Quality VRA equipment is used daily in pediatric settings. Look for a system designed to withstand constant use, movement between rooms, and long clinical schedules. 5. Versatility and Future Features Clinics benefit from VRA systems that grow with them. Software based systems often release updates, new reinforcers, and feature improvements that extend the life of the system without requiring new hardware. 6. Support and Service Make sure the company behind your VRA system offers reliable support. Pediatric audiology depends on smooth daily operation, so access to fast assistance matters. By evaluating these factors, clinics can choose VRA equipment that improves workflow, supports accurate Visual Reinforcement Audiometry, and creates a better experience for both the child and family.

  • Does VRA Require Calibration | Flex VRA

Does a VRA System Need Calibration? One of the most common questions in pediatric audiology is whether a VRA system needs to be calibrated. The answer depends on what the term “calibration” refers to. Audio Calibration VRA equipment itself does not generate calibrated sound. The audiometer is the device responsible for delivering calibrated signals. As long as the audiometer is calibrated according to ANSI standards, the audio portion of the VRA test remains accurate. The VRA system simply presents the visual reinforcement once the child responds. Visual Calibration There is no formal visual calibration standard in Visual Reinforcement Audiometry. However, consistency matters. Clinics should verify that: • The left and right reinforcers activate at the correct moment • The reinforcers are bright and visible from the child’s position • The timing of activation matches the audiologist’s expectations Modern software based systems make this easier because they remove the mechanical delays found in older VRA boxes. Positioning and Setup Although VRA systems do not require calibration in the same way an audiometer does, proper setup is essential. • Reinforcers should be placed at roughly 45 degrees to the child • The height should match eye level • The center reinforcer should help maintain attention without overpowering the side reinforcers New features like House Rules in Flex VRA allow clinics to keep the center screen simple and add consistency to the test. When to Recheck Your VRA Equipment You should review your VRA system if you notice: • Delayed activation • Dim or inconsistent displays • Loose mounts or shifted positions • Software not responding correctly These checks help maintain accurate and repeatable VRA sessions. Summary A VRA system does not require formal calibration, but proper setup, clean activation timing, and consistent visibility are essential for reliable Visual Reinforcement Audiometry. Using well designed VRA equipment ensures accurate responses and smooth pediatric hearing evaluations.

  • About VRA | Flex VRA

What Is VRA in Pediatric Audiology Visual Reinforcement Audiometry, often called VRA, is a behavioral hearing test used for young children. It is one of the most important tools in pediatric audiology because it allows clinicians to assess hearing in infants and toddlers who are too young for traditional tests. A VRA system pairs a sound stimulus with a visual reward. When the child hears a sound from the left or right, they naturally turn toward it. When they do, the VRA system presents a visual reinforcer on that side. This reinforces the behavior and helps the audiologist measure hearing thresholds. How a VRA System Works: A complete VRA system includes three main components • A left reinforcer • A right reinforcer • A center monitor that keeps the child relaxed and in position Each reinforcer displays a short, engaging animation or light pattern when the audiologist activates it. In a modern clinic, VRA equipment is controlled through a dedicated remote or through integrated audiometer software. Why VRA Is So Effective VRA is effective because it uses natural child behavior. Infants instinctively orient toward interesting sounds. The visual reward keeps them motivated to respond again and again. A good VRA system helps the clinician collect reliable responses quickly, reduce test fatigue, and create a positive experience for the child and parent. Modern Advances in VRA Equipment Clinics today are choosing software based VRA systems because they offer: • Faster stimulus switching • More engaging and flexible content • Options for custom videos or clinic branding • Higher reliability compared to older mechanical boxes Systems like Flex VRA use software driven reinforcers to give audiologists more control, better timing, and more consistency than traditional hardware. If you are comparing VRA systems or upgrading your VRA equipment, understanding the basics of how Visual Reinforcement Audiometry Systems works will help you choose the right solution for your practice.

  • About Flex VRA: Leading Audiology Innovators

Discover how Flex VRA revolutionizes audiology with innovative solutions. Learn about our growth and commitment to audiology excellence. Flex VRA's primary focus is to serve the parents who walks through the booth door. When we help a child feel comfortable and engaged, the audiologist can deliver a fast and accurate evaluation, and the parent can clearly understand their child’s hearing needs. In serving that moment, trust flows from the family to the audiologist, from the audiologist to the distributor who recommended our solution, and finally from the distributor to Flex for delivering the best VRA system we can create. Every link in that chain is important, but the most important piece is the parents.” Steve Smith, Owner About Flex VRA Innovative Audiology Solutions, Tailored for the Modern Clinic At Flex VRA, we believe in transforming the way audiologists conduct hearing tests on pediatric and difficult to test patients. Founded by Steve Smith in 2017, Flex VRA began as a response to a simple but important question posed by a colleague in the audiology field: “Is there a way to completely control what shows up on my VRA screens while testing a child? It would be a much better way to maintain their attention during the test.” At that time, the answer was no. But Steve, a former audiometric equipment representative, was determined to change that. His experience in the field combined with a passion for creating better solutions led him to design a prototype that not only met this challenge but exceeded expectations. The prototype allowed users to tailor the video content and environment on the VRA screens, ensuring a more engaging and productive hearing test for children. This innovation was a success and the positive feedback led to more requests from audiologists. People wanted additional features like remote control functionality, the ability to upload their own videos, and integration with audiometers. Flex VRA’s response was simple: Yes, let’s try it. Each request was turned into an opportunity to improve and innovate. Whether it was adding games for Conditioned Play Audiometry or creating an always-on mode for distraction during testing, Flex VRA continuously adapted its system to meet the unique needs of audiologists and their patients. • Flex PC for Audiometric Testing | Flex VRA

Streamline audiometric testing with Flex PC—control VRA video & toy systems from one interface. Designed for efficient, distraction-free hearing assessments. Folleto Haga clic en el icono de sonido Flex PC ofrece a los audiólogos un control completo de los sistemas de audiometría de refuerzo visual (VRA) de video y de juguete desde su computadora. Why Is Flex PC important? Flex PC enhances workflow efficiency in visual reinforcement audiometry, especially for clinics using computerized clinical audiometers. When testing pediatric patients, every second counts. Moving between the audiometer, keyboard, mouse, and VRA remote can interrupt focus and delay results. Flex PC eliminates that back-and-forth by putting full VRA control directly on your computer. Audiologists can assign custom hotkeys to activate visual reinforcers instantly—keeping attention on the child, not the controls. Even if you don’t use a computerized audiometer, Flex PC is still valuable as a standalone controller or reliable backup in case your VRA remote is ever misplaced. In any setup, Flex PC ensures your clinic can always perform visual reinforcement audiometry smoothly and without interruption. Want to see a demo? Schedule Now!
